The Miami Lit Scene?

If you’re anything like me, finding a literary community in Miami has been a bit of a dicey enterprise once you’ve finished scouring Barnes & Noble and Books & Books. The State of the Arts: Mangrove, Miami, and the Literary Beyond

One of the most exciting parts about working on Mangrove is that we are still so young and green. Getting together with the editors and the staff to talk about our plans and goals for the journal, I can’t help but get the tingling sense that what we’re doing now goes beyond now, and that what we’re trying to do as undergrads at UM goes beyond the university and our time here. Taking on the responsibility for the success of such a fledgling publication and project, nestled between the cracks of an institution so focused on business, science, and the art of making money, is definitely daunting. As we prepare to open up submissions nationally, one of my missions as Associate Editor this year is to get Mangrove on the boat, to nudge us out into the waters and take a more active role in helping cultivate and promote a real literary arts community from within UM, out into the city of Miami, and beyond.

For my first post, I just want to briefly spotlight a few things that have been going on in the scene at UM and around Miami that I’m proud of and think are great and worth sharing with the world. We may be young, and we may be small, but we have lots of potential and the good weather on our side 🙂 Continue reading
